A Cathedral for a Prosperous Medieval City
Construction of the Cathedral of St. Elisabeth began in the late 14th century on the site of an earlier church destroyed by fire.
At the time, Košice was one of the wealthiest towns in the Kingdom of Hungary, flourishing through trade routes that connected East and West.
The city's prosperity allowed its citizens to undertake an ambitious building project inspired by the great Gothic cathedrals of Central Europe.
