Sainte-Chapelle: The Building Made of Glass
Sainte-Chapelle in Paris changed how Gothic architecture used light.
Built for King Louis IX to house sacred relics, it replaced much of the wall surface with towering stained-glass windows.
In the upper chapel, stone almost disappears behind colour.
This achievement marked one of the finest expressions of Rayonnant Gothic, where tracery, glass, and light became the dominant architectural experience.

Its choir vault rises approximately 48 metres, the tallest Gothic vault ever built.
Yet its extreme height came with structural risk. Collapses and repeated repairs prevented the cathedral from ever reaching its full planned form.
Beauvais remains one of the most dramatic examples of Gothic engineering pushed to its limits.
It reminds us that architectural progress often came through experimentation, failure, and risk.
